The team lifts its first LAN trophy after outclassing Sweden's most storied organization on home turf.
Metizport dealt NIP a blow to their confidence ahead of the Shanghai Major Europe RMR
Metizport have been crowned champions of Svenska Cupen 2024 after a resounding 3-0 victory over Ninjas in Pyjamas in the grand final (13-4 Vertigo, 16-13 Mirage, 13-9 Ancient).
It is the first offline trophy for the Norwegian organization and for Swedish prospect Linus "nilo" Bergman, who ended the series atop the scoreboard with a 1.36 rating and 59-39 K-D.
The victory is likely made all the more sweet for him, Adam "adamb" Ångström, and Nicolas "Plopski" Gonzalez Zamora, the former pair having passed through the Swedish organization's academy roster and the latter getting removed from the main team at the start of 2023.
It also comes barely a month after the Norwegian organization added Casper "SHiNE" Wennerberg to take over leadership duties, with his captaincy freeing up Plopski from the role and already leading the team to a title win.
For Ninjas in Pyjamas, the fashion of the 0-3 defeat is a severe blow to their confidence ahead of their trip to China for the Perfect World Shanghai Major Europe RMR.
The team was already playing from behind after announcing that Max "maxster" Jansson would miss both Svenska Cupen and the RMR and that they would use Young Ninjas' Jacob "jocab" Nerheden as a stand-in, but it doesn't help that the 19-year-old has struggled immensely in his first four events with the main team (averaging a 0.85 rating across 18 maps) and that Artem "r1nkle" Moroz is straining for the consistency he showed when he first joined the Swedish organization.
Ninjas in Pyjamas were outclassed when the series began, falling completely flat on their Vertigo pick with only two T side rounds. They barely doubled that in the second half — thanks only to a pistol win and conversion — before Metizport closed out the map, led by a 20-13 K-D and 1.98 rating from adamb and supporting performances by nilo and Plopski.
r1nkle's recent struggles continued as he had a particularly poor showing, posting a 0.46 rating and 5-13 K-D, and that downtrodden form continued on Mirage with several key missed shots.
Ninjas in Pyjamas did a better job at contesting for a win than they had on Vertigo but it was largely thanks to Fredrik "REZ" Sterner and jocab's efforts on the T side, which helped NIP pull back from a 4-11 deficit before they lost steam in overtime.
The trend continued on Ancient with NIP taking the lead on the attack, an adamb ace on a half-buy briefly throwing a wrench in the works before the Ninjas pushed up to a 6-3 lead. Metizport weathered the storm, however, and claimed the final three of the half before nilo took control after the side swap, spurred on by excellent offensive reads and calls as Metizport put their opponents to bed to close the series.
